Test mode

Build without sending real SMS, and how your account’s test mode works.

There are two separate kinds of “test”: test keys, and your account’s test mode.

Test keys: build without sending

With a fz_test_ key, messages are saved but never handed to a mobile network, and nothing is charged. A few seconds later each one moves from QUEUED to SENT to DELIVERED, and your webhooks receive the same events as for real messages, with "livemode": false.

You can send to any valid number; nobody receives anything.
Up to 5,000 numbers a day; over that you get 429 with TEST_LIMIT_REACHED.
Test keys only see test messages, and live keys only see real ones.
Everything else (validation, templates, errors) behaves exactly as it does live.

Your account’s test mode

Until one of your sender IDs is verified, your SMS account is in test mode. Live keys still send real SMS then, but:

only to the phone numbers you verified under Settings › Apps › SMS in the app,
from the demo sender ID, with a short test line added,
and other numbers come back refused with NOT_A_TEST_NUMBER.
